Singapore SME AI use tripled. The gap with larger firms still widened

IMDA's data shows 95.1 percent of small businesses already using at least one digital tool, and AI use tripling between 2023 and 2024. The constraint is not appetite. It is picking the wrong first thing.

Five matte white machined blocks of ascending height arranged as a staircase, the leading edge of the tallest one red.

AI use among Singapore small businesses tripled between 2023 and 2024, and the gap with larger companies widened over the same period. Both things are true, and the second is the interesting one.

A tripling from a small base against competitors compounding from a larger one produces exactly this. The question is not how to start — 95.1 percent have already started something — but why the starts are not accumulating into capability.

What the ones that pull ahead have in common

They pick a use case where the friction is real and measurable, rather than the one that demonstrates best. They can state the baseline before go-live, so improvement is a measurement rather than a feeling. And someone owns the thing after the project closes.

None of those three is a technology decision. All three are the difference between a tool that gets used in month six and one that quietly stops.

The category to be careful with

Anything touching customer-facing decisions, personal data, or regulated records raises the evidentiary bar sharply, and an SME rarely has the governance overhead to absorb that on a first deployment.

It is not that these are off limits. It is that they are a poor second project and a worse first one, and the sequencing is what most adoption programmes get wrong.
