Legacy Equipment Connectivity Checker

Five questions about one machine — what controls it, what it is physically wired to, whose permission you need, what you want out of it, and whether it can ever stop. It returns every viable route with a cost band and a named risk against each, including the case where the machine has no digital interface at all and data has to be created rather than read.

How the connectivity routes are chosenA decision tree. The first question asks whether the equipment has an open protocol. If yes, the route is to read it directly. If no, the next question asks whether the vendor will grant access, leading to a gateway or a licensed driver. If not, the next question asks whether a serial port or wired signals exist, leading to serial conversion or a parallel signal tap. If none of those exist, the route is retrofit sensing or a camera reading the display. The order the checker works in. Note where the tree stops: writing back to a machine needs the control system itself opened, and no amount of sensing gets you there.

If the panel has not been opened recently, answer from what is known rather than what is hoped. An honest 'nobody is certain' produces a more useful result than a guess.

Select everything that is physically present. Most machines have more than one, and the cheap route is frequently the one nobody thought to look for.

Which of these does the machine have?

A serial port that has not been used since commissioning still counts. So does a relay output feeding a lamp.

This is a commercial question more often than a technical one, and it rules more routes in and out than anything else on the page.
